  • Missed periods
  • Spotting between periods
  • Pelvic pain

Most of the time, these symptoms indicate treatable health issues. However, you could have a more complex gynecologic problem such as endometriosis or uterine cysts, so it’s important to get evaluated.

What routine gynecologic exams and assessments are recommended?

Recommendations for Pap smear, pelvic exams, and other tests differ by age and risk factors. However, the general guidelines are as follows:

Pap test

  • Ages 21-29: Pap every three years
  • Ages 30-64: Pap and HPV test every five years
  • Ages 65 and up: you may not need Pap tests anymore

Pelvic exam

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends a yearly pelvic exam from 21 years on. You may also need a pelvic exam when you see the doctor for gynecologic issues.

Breast exam

You may want to perform a breast self-exam once a month to detect any changes. A breast exam is recommended every 1-3 years for low-risk women between 20 and 40.

Starting at age 40, you can start getting mammograms once a year. After age 55, you can get mammograms every two years.
